THE THIEF OF BAGDAD
– Douglas Fairbanks –
The chief star and producer of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, wrote scripts that fit his gallant, optimistic persona. Starring in his own movies since the early 1920’s, Douglas Fairbanks, “America’s greatest exponent of the smile,” appeared in – and wrote stories for – The Mark of Zorro (1920), The 3 Musketeers (1921), Douglas Fairbanks in Robin Hood (1922), The Thief of Bagdad (1924), The Black Pirate (1926), The Gaucho (1927) and The Iron Mask (1929).
THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, his biggest adventure, costing $2 million, with a long production time, was eagerly anticipated by the public. It is based on a popular story from the Tales of the Arabian Nights, invoking elaborate sets, and lavish costumes. It was critically acclaimed, and made the “Top Ten List” of the New York Times.
